“It Might Be My Last World Cup,” R Ashwin Says About His Last-Minute Inclusion in India’s World Cup Squad

As Axar Patel’s quadriceps injury prevented him from recovering in time for the World Cup, veteran off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin spoke up on being inserted into India’s World Cup team at the last minute. Ashwin will participate in his third ODI World Cup after previously been a member of the winning team in 2011 and the semifinal-advancing team in 2015. Only Ashwin and Virat Kohli were chosen for the 2017 World Cup roster out of the legendary 2011 World Cup winning side.<img decoding=”async” class=”alignnone wp-image-214634″ src=”https://www.theindiaprint.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/theindiaprint.com-gst-collection-jumps-10-yoy-to-rs-1-63-trillion-in-september-view-details-download.jpg” alt=”theindiaprint.com gst collection jumps 10 yoy to rs 1 63 trillion in september view details download” width=”1495″ height=”994″ srcset=”https://www.theindiaprint.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/theindiaprint.com-gst-collection-jumps-10-yoy-to-rs-1-63-trillion-in-september-view-details-download.jpg 275w, https://www.theindiaprint.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/theindiaprint.com-gst-collection-jumps-10-yoy-to-rs-1-63-trillion-in-september-view-details-download-150×100.jpg 150w” sizes=”(max-width: 1495px) 100vw, 1495px” title=”"It Might Be My Last World Cup," R Ashwin Says About His Last-Minute Inclusion in India's World Cup Squad 3″>

Prior to the World Cup, Ashwin returned to the India ODI squad for the series against Australia. Ashwin’s comeback to the ODI lineup was over 20 months in the making.

Dinesh Karthik, a wicketkeeper batsman, opened up to the seasoned spinner during their interview for Star Sports about his return in ODIs.

He said with a grin, “I would be saying you are kidding,” and then continued, “Life is full of surprises and I honestly wasn’t expecting I would be here. I am present today thanks to circumstances and the faith that the team management has shown. But for the last several years, loving the game has been my main goal, and I’ll be doing that in this competition.

Washington Sundar was passed over in favor of Ashwin for the World Cup team. The 37-year-old took one wicket in the ODI encounter against Australia in Mohali, but in the second game, when he had greater control of the ball, he took three. In the third ODI, when he failed to pick up a wicket, India selected Sundar.

The seasoned spinner said that the huge tournament in 2023 may be his last World Cup and that he is in a good frame of mind.

“All I do is turn the ball in both directions, which I believe I can already accomplish. In these kinds of competitions, it’s all about making minor adjustments and handling pressure. Most players in these competitions place a high value on pressure, but how you handle it will determine how well you and your team do. I believe that being in a positive frame of mind and having fun with the game will serve me well. I’ve said it again, but this could be my last World Cup for India,” he remarked.
